There are many reasons that weight loss may be difficult. Weight loss shouldn't be about just being thin - it is about health, total body wellness, feeling good and having energy!

Last night Dr. Brimhall shared a few tips and tricks to help assist in this process. There may be an interference with your body that is an underlying issue to your weight. You may want to consider having a blood panel done, suggested by Dr. Brimhall or Dr. Martinsen to get a more clear picture of what is going on with you. We offer the panel at discount prices through our office.
Along with checking out what may be happening on the inside of your body, there are things you can do outwardly to make your body healthy, which essentially will help you loose and keep off weight.

Keep a regular schedule.
- Go to bed at the same time every night, to ensure you get the best sleep without tossing and turning.
- A healthy eating schedule puts you in control because it helps you avoid surprises. You plan out your meals and snacks ahead of time, and you eat them at scheduled times throughout the day.

Choose the best.
There are many foods that are good, but are you choosing what is the best. Remember there are good, better and best choices. Yogurt can be good for you but check the ingredients to find the best.

No excuses.
Weight loss isn't an easy feat! It's proven that the 'fast track diets' where you loose a lot of weight in a minimal amount of time shows that weight is gained back. Often times it is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. We've heard people blame their weight on genetics. Where this may be partially true most of it has to do with our environment and what we surround ourselves with. Again....choose good, better and best!

Find your motivation.
Set your goals and reward yourself for reaching them. Find what works for you and what keeps you motivated to keep the weight and increase your energy!

Call and make an appointment with Andrea in our office to create and set goals for your meal plan! If you are interested in the fliers handed out at last night's class let us know!

REMINDER:
February 15th is our free class on Heart Health

Nutrition products are always 10% off after each class, or you can also order online.

Happy New Year

We hope you had a safe and fun New Year's! Pain and discomfort start to set in, and so on, spiraling downward.

So is gravity our enemy? I think not earthling. The problem of course is mal-alignment. If we are correctly aligned, the pull of gravity actually works to our advantage! Maintaining structural integrity enables us to weight-train, build lean muscle mass, and strengthen our joints and bones. When we carry gravity well, it makes us stronger.

This same principle applies to other aspects of our being as well. Mental, emotional and spiritual “gravity” pull on us all to varying degrees at various times. Demand on our time, schedules, and relationships are things we can’t always get away from. Nor should we! The things and people we have responsibility and accountability for are appropriate stresses to carry. Assuming we are appropriately “aligned”, we can manage these demands and it can make us stronger.

There is very good research that points to chronic stress being a contributing factor in everything from wrinkles to cancer. This information should be taken into account in our discussion, but I recently became aware of another study recently published in the journal Cell which has some surprising results.

Researchers injected lab mice beforehand with melanoma and allowed some skin tumors to grow. They then put some of the mice in a large cage and filled it with lots of toys, plenty of space and many more mice than usual, while leaving the other mice in ordinary lab cages. I noted that the “enriched” cage was not always a friendly environment! It was very exciting and stressful for the mice, and they would fight sometimes. After some time they measured the progress of the tumors and found that they had actually shrunk sometimes by 50% on the mice under increased stress!

So the point is not to eliminate stress completely, just like we don’t eliminate gravity completely. We find ways to make distinctions between what is important to carry and what we can set aside. Then shift our perspective to re-align with our core values so the pressure we experience as stress can have a positive, strengthening effect on our lives.

-Michael Sanders

Staying positive in stressful situations!

One of the most difficult things to do when you are under a lot of stress is to stay positive. In many cases, situations do not cause all of the stress that we experience. Sometimes, our reaction to circumstances (and what we say to ourselves about them) contributes to the stress we experience.Sometimes we are right in what we say to ourselves. Often, however, we are overly harsh and unjust in a way that we would never be with friends or co-workers. This, along with other negative thinking, can cause intense stress and unhappiness and can severely damage your self-confidence.
Negative thinking damages your performance by undermining your self-confidence. It also occupies attention at times when you need to focus your entire mind on what you are doing. This section shows you how to counter negative thinking effectively so that you can perform at your best.

Stress Diary:

One of the benefits of using the Stress Diary is that you log all of the unpleasant things in your life that cause you stress for one or two weeks. This will include negative thoughts and anxieties, and can also include difficult or unpleasant memories and situations that you perceive as negative.

By logging your negative thoughts for a reasonable period of time, you will quickly see patterns in your negative thinking. When you analyze your diary at the end of the period, you should be able to see the most common and the most damaging thoughts. Tackle these as a priority. Now that you have something specific to work on this is a great time to make an appointment with Michael!

Physical Stress response:

Remember a time when you had a VERY stressful day. At the end of the day I'm sure you were exhausted even if you did not have a physically strenuous day. This is because stress can change our biochemistry and our physical structure. We all have what I call our “favorite spots”. Meaning those areas that seem to hurt when we are under more stress. Sometimes it's the shoulders/neck or between the shoulder blades or even indigestion. A chiropractic adjustment can be used as a type of “pattern interrupt” to that stress response. This helps get your body out of “dis-eased” and back to “ease”.

- Dr. Martinsen

Keep moving forward

This past weekend I was invited by a friend and client to participate in her walk to “Defeat ALS”. ALS is a diagnosis where there is progressive loss in motor strength due to nerve problems.

The walk began at Scottsdale stadium and coursed around for 2 miles then returned back to the stadium. Her family had an electric scooter for her due to their concern and mine that she would be able to have the strength to walk the complete 2 miles. She would have nothing to do with that scooter. I think the scooter looked more fatigued than her. I thought maybe her husband would need to ride in it.

She walked the whole way, hand in hand with her husband, family, and friends. We were there to supposedly to "support her". But as it turns out, I think we felt more supported by her than her by us! We start the sugar feast in early October and it doesn’t slow down much until we hit the New Year with our New Years “Resolutions!” I think the increased consumption of sugar, the change in our climate and the stress of the holiday helps us “earn” those colds and make us a perfect host for the infections to take hold.

So, off my soap box…

What are we to do? We can only control some of the above parameters. What we put in our mouths, how much sleep we get, and how much we choose to stress. So this is our opportunity. To reduce you risk of “Catching or Earning” the flu here are some suggestions:

Get adequate sleep

Dress appropriately for your activity and weather

Simplify to reduce your stress

Choose your food wisely

Take your vitamins

Spend time with those you love and that love you

Exercise

Get a massage or adjusted or both

If you do start getting sick or are sick the following can be very helpful:

Take a detox bath with bath salts

Get a massage and get adjusted

Get extra sleep

Take Total Virx (1 every hour to 2 hours that you are awake for 3-5 days, then as you feel better reduce the dose to 1 3 x a day.)

Increase you DSF from 1 tablet 2 x a day to 2 tablets 2 x a day.

Take probiotics and enzymes

For children increase there vitamin C (like Chewable C 500) Give them probiotics and enzymes. Place them in a detox bath.

These steps will increase the odds you have of not “earning” a cold or flu. But, if you do start getting sick refer back to the above list and shorten the duration of the illness significantly. <img style="display: block; But chances are someone around me is going to be sick this season. We can’t get away from it. Even when we care for ourselves, our families and loved ones with great vigilance, we are hard pressed to guard against people at work, school or the grocery store (You know, when their grimy, sneezed on hands used the cart you’re about to use now?).

We are going to be exposed.

Yet last year, when my wife and four of my children got sick, I didn’t. Now, I know I was exposed. I did not hold back hugs and kisses when my little ones felt bad. So what made the difference? Somehow, my immune system was in a position where it could handle the added stress of a virus. Boosting your immune system is your best bet to fend off the nasty, scary flu.

Here are some ways to turbo boost your immune system naturally.

Get a Chiropractic Adjustment. During the 1918 flu epidemic in the United States, where many people died, chiropractic care was shown to save lives…literally. The state of Iowa reported that allopathic medical doctors treating influenza and pneumonia patients lost 1 in 15 to the illness. Compare this to the loss of 1 in 789 for those treated with chiropractic! This difference was so dramatic that, in fact, in Oklahoma there is “a clear record showing that chiropractors were called in 233 cases where medical doctors had cared for the patients and finally gave them up as lost. The chiropractors saved all these lost cases but 25.” (These numbers and this quote are from Walter R. Rhodes, D.C.’s article The Official History of Chiropractic in Texas.)

Get Therapeutic Bodywork, a Massage, or Acupuncture. I read an article from September 9th of this year in Science Daily that reports that a recent study showed that adults demonstrated a modified immune response after receiving a massage. The researchers took blood samples at various intervals before and after treatment. They noticed significant changes in the activity and number of natural killer cells and T cells in the blood and a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol at high levels can suppress the immune system.

Exercise moderately and regularly. A great article by Kevin Conley, a reporter for the Tribune-Review February 2, 2003 summarizes some of the reasons why exercise is so good for the immune system. Among these are increased lung activity which can rid the lungs of certain airborne bacteria and viruses and increased blood flow which can more quickly circulate antibodies and white blood cells needed to fight infection. Remember that more is not necessarily better, though. High intensity exercise may actually suppress the immune system for short periods of time leaving you vulnerable to infection.

Eat the way Andrea wants you to. And make it the way you want too. And like it! As she says, lower your sugar intake and eat raw vegetables with each meal and in-between meals. (See her previous blog entry)

Breathe! The authors of the textbook, Mind Body Health: The Effects of Attitudes, Emotions, and Relationships (I highly recommend this book, by the way) write, “Does stress cause infection? Researchers don’t think so. They are convinced, however, that stress compromises the immune system enough for infection to take hold…stress can delay and sometimes even prevent acquired immunity, leaving you susceptible to another bout of the cold or flu you just got over. (pg.49)” In dealing with the various stress in our lives my favorite place to start is good breathing. Breathe with your belly, expanding it like a balloon as you inhale and allowing it to relax completely as you exhale. A few minutes of mindful belly breathing can lower your body’s stress response.

Get your Nutrition evaluated by Dr. Brimhall or Dr. Martinsen. Taking a product like Virx or Immugen is always a good start.

Come in for a Spectra-Scan. The Spectra-Vision is a non-cognitive bio-feedback device that uses principles of acupuncture combined with homeopathy. We use it to test the energy of your body against the energy of another substance like a virus or bacteria. We then balance your body’s response to that substance using a natural homeopathic remedy imprinted according to your specific scan results. If this is something that interests you, my recommendations are as follows:

If you feel well:
   i. Get full scan each quarter with the changing of the seasons.
ii. OR get a Virus and Bacteria Scan with Virx or Immugen imprint every 6-8 weeks or as you run out of the remedy.

If you are sick:
i. Get a Virus and Bacteria scan with Virx, Immugen or MucRx with imprint for acute symptoms.
ii. OR come in and buy a non-imprinted product. Better than nothing!

I do love this season when the weather starts to cool down. Here in AZ it is soooo welcome. My hope is that we all can get the immune boost we need so we can enjoy it fully with our families and loved ones.

Peace,
Michael

Scorpions

We have had several patients ask about scorpion stings this past week. Since many of us are living in the Arizona Desert, which is where the scorpion calls home, it is not uncommon this time of year to see scorpions.

Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Chandler are all mapped with high scorpion density. The surrounding cities like Awatukee, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek and Carefree tend to have a slightly higher scorpion call volume most likely due to the extensive dessert landscaping found in these areas.Scorpion stings are common at night because scorpions are nocturnal by nature. Most stings are not fatal. Most complications come in the form of allergic reactions to the venom.

We would recommend that you have a bottle of liquid MiVita Minerals at home in case of a scorpion sting! You can call our office to purchase it or order it on our supplement website www.brimhallsupplements.com.

If you have ever been stung you know how much it hurts! Here's what do to if you get stung:

Take an old cloth (it will stain) and soak it in MiVita Minerals

Wrap the soaked cloth over the sting site

Wrap plastic wrap around the cloth to contain it

Leave on for 30 minutes

Repeat process 4 times throughout day

If you are unaware if you have scorpions you can use a black light and 'hunt' for them at night, they will glow. If you see one chances are that there will be more. We suggest calling an exterminator right away.

FREE Health Screenings!

For the next 2 weeks we will be doing FREE Health Screenings!<img style="display: block; These highly refined sugars are in foods you may not even be aware of such as bread, breakfast cereal, protein bars, peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, and even canned beans.
How does sugar suppress you immune system? Glucose (Sugar) and Vitamin C have similar chemical structures; when the sugar levels go up they compete for one another upon entering the cells. If there is
more glucose around, there is going to be less vitamin C allowed into the cell. Basically when you eat sugar, think of your immune system slowing down to a crawl. When your immune system is down you're at a higher risk of getting sick.

As the holidays are fast approaching with that comes the dreaded cold and flu season. Just one of the ingredients is B vitamins which are essential to nervous system function.

Omega Balance contains essential fatty acids. One of which is Docosahexanoic acid or DHA. Many experts recommend essential fatty acids (cod liver oil, flax seed oil, olive oil) for behavioral disorders. DHA helps support the brain's enormous need for energy, and is found in fish oil. Essential fatty acid pathways may be impaired in ADD.

Don't forget: Total Brain & Omega Balance are Products of the Month and are 10% off!

Is my child struggling, or is he/she just young?

It's not often that we view children in the same grade at school to be different ages. We usually think that if they are in the same grade they must be the same age. That's not always the case. I think it’s something to think about, especially if your child struggles to pay attention. Are they really struggling or are they younger than their peers? I have had several patients tell me that their child is having a hard time paying attention, isn't retaining what they are learning or are having a hard time focusing.

It is important to know how your brain works and what influences your ability to focus, concentrate and learn. It also wastes an estimated $320 million-$500 million a year on unnecessary medication -- some $80 million-$90 million of it paid by Medicaid, stated Elder.

According to Dr. Daniel Amen, some learning difficulty may be from distractibility, hormone imbalance, impulsivity, or even from sensory integration difficulties. Dr. Amen states that there are 6 different types of ADD and each type responds differently to different interventions.

If you or your child is suffering with this please know that Brimhall Wellness Center offers therapies that many of our children patients are using to enhance their learning, memory retention and assisting those with ADD. If this is something you have been wondering about, please call our office so we can help you take the first step in the right direction.

- Dr. Brett Brimhall, DC

What was I going to do?

Do you ever go into a room to get something and forget what you were after? Thank you to Sara Snow who shares how to help parents pack lunches that are both healthy and delicious!

1. Scratch the Sandwich:If your child isn't a sandwich fan (as I wasn't as a kid) you might have to get creative. Pack hummus and vegetables, cheese and crackers, cold veggie pizza or soup.

2. Keep it Simple:
Don't try to get fancy or pretty with every lunch. A simple apple is better than individually packaged apple slices with fruit dip.

3. Remember Left-overs:
Last night's dinner often makes the best and most nutritious lunch. Pack up leftover pasta, pizza, salad, soup, or casserole. Add a little fruit or veggies and call it good. If your child doesn't have a way to heat food, try heating in the morning and packing in an insulated container, or pack leftovers that serve up well cold like pizza and salad.

5. Employ the Littlest Helpers:
Let you kids help you pack up their own lunch. They'll be more likely to eat it when they hit the cafeteria tables that way.

6. And of course...
Pack a Rainbow. Pack a red apple, some purple grape juice, some brown wheat bread and some green lettuce, to create a rainbow in your child's lunchbox. The common self-help doctrine of the day says to focus on yourself! You can’t change them anyway. You have to wait until they are ready. You can’t make them happy. For that matter, you can’t make them sad either! You can’t use your personal will to make them angry, get a job, stop smoking or wiggle their big toe. So stop trying to change other people. Change yourself instead. That is all you can do.

After having said that, I would like to say that a big chunk of this ideology might be right, but the other half is absolutely wrong. In some cases, even dangerously wrong. While it is true that those you love must make individual choices for their own well being that you or anyone else cannot make for them, their best, most powerful hope for change…Is YOU. In reality, the people you love who need to make major changes in their life are unlikely to do it on their own. But they can and will make changes with the loving support and encouragement of people who genuinely care about them. And if their life is in danger in some way by the choices they are making you cannot afford to ‘wait until they are ready’.
Amazingly, study after study shows that we often reflect those we hang out with the most. You hang with people who spend money recklessly; you may be prone to similar behavior. You hang with people who drink and smoke, your chances of drinking and smoking go up. You hang with people who are angry or have destructive habits and it is likely that you will feel angry much of the time or take on those habits yourself. Of course if the people we hang with are happy, health-conscious and wealthy, our propensity towards those things increases as well. Our best chance for change is with each other!

It is not about not being with negative people. It is about filling your life with so many good people and relationships that we become the positive force for change for the person we love so much. So, in a way, we can change them! Their change is in our relationship. Don’t give up. Change may take time, but it can also happen in an instant.

Peace,

Michael

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Growing up my mom was adamant about having us eat a good breakfast. She would say "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." She was right.

Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. It doesn't take much further thought to realize adults will feel better and perform better at work as well. Whether you work at home, at the office, at school, or on the road, it is not a good idea to skip breakfast. Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Here's a Breakfast recipe from Andrea, our Nutrition Coach here at our Wellness Center.

Veggie Frittata
1 cup sautéed vegetables (spinach, broccoli, onions)
1 egg yolk
3 to 4 egg whites
pepper
dash of hot sauce
1 tbs crumbled feta
reheat oven to 350°.
Over medium heat, sauté veggies.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg whites, egg yolks, hot sauce, and pepper.
Pour the egg mixture into the pan and stir with a spatula.
Bake until almost firm to touch sprinkle with the feta.

You have a choice!

If you have a health problem, how do you decide to address it? Is your decision of treatment based on fixing the symptom or on finding the cause? Is it based on doing what insurance will cover or what you learned from the internet?

My view of health care is very tainted. I believe that you are responsible for yourself. I believe that you should be in control of how you handle your health. In my opinion our current "health care” model is not about health care, it is more about disease care. It doesn’t seem right that in order for us to be treated, we have to be sick. So even when you or someone you love is not feeling well and the testing is ‘normal’ - just know you are just not “sick enough” to receive care yet. Health is not the absence of symptoms.

In order to be and stay healthy we must find the cause of the problem, whether it is physical, emotional, chemical, toxin, electro-magetic, or allergy based! Ultimately your health is your choice. Right now you have a choice! If you or someone in your family had a problem what would you do? Who would you see?

If I were sick or did not feel well I would choose to go to the Brimhall Wellness Center or one that works like we do so I could get healthy and stay healthy!

Take back your health! Be in control of your health! After all, you are in charge of you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Brett Brimhall

NeuroIntegration Thearpy

What is NeuroIntegration Therapy?

Clear Mind Center has created the unique NeuroIntegration System, a ground breaking approach in multi-sensory brainwave therapy. Our unique photic technology informs the brain of the frequency it needs to learn and guides the brain into producing new efficient brainwave states through EEG driven auditory and visual feedback. Our state-of-the-art system combines these technologies to achieve rapid improvement in mental and physical states, yielding powerful long lasting results.

This multi-sensory approach interrupts ineffective mental patterns, lifting us out of habitual, non-productive thoughts. By balancing the brain and regulating the nervous system, new thought patterns are allowed to break through old filters responsible for causing a wide variety of disorders. NeuroIntegration Therapy has been proven to be a very powerful technique for improving brain functions.

Clear Mind Center’s NeuroIntegration system works through a mechanism known as operant conditioning. When a part of the brain is operating at an abnormal frequency (too fast or too slow), the brain can learn to normalize the activity of that area.

How NeuroIntegration Therapy Works

THE BRAIN IS A LEARNING MACHINE
If you signal the brain through Photic stim lights, the brain will learn to make normal brainwave patterns through guided feedback. Continuous feedback retrains the brain to reduce abnormal activity and stay within normal ranges. Eventually, the brain learns how to stay within normal ranges without NeuroIntegration training, and is able to sustain normal activity independently. The mechanism is through reorganization of functional pathways in the brain.

Many breakdowns in health start with subtle changes in brain chemistry, which alter brainwaves in very specific ways. Brainwaves can be measured using electrodes similar to the ones used for an EKG. Research has found that a Quantitative EEG has high reliability, equal to such routine tests a MRI and Cat scans.

How are Brain Waves Meaured?
Clear Mind Center offers Neuro-Mapping to evaluate brain function. The Neuro-Map is able to record your patients brainwaves in real time and offer a detailed visual report in minutes. In addition, a comprehensive neurological assessment plan with NeuroIntegration training protocols is provided to correct abnormal brainwave patterns found in the Neuro-Map.

Research and clinical studies show that many cognitive conditions unresponsive to medication or psychotherapy can be resolved within 20-40 therapy sessions. At the other end of the spectrum, chronic disorders such as anxiety, even if present over many years, can show improvement after just one treatment.

What causes the brain’s dominant frequencies to get stuck?
While genetics and birth complications can be contributing factors, research studies show that unresolved post-traumatic stress pushes the brain into patterns of chronic over-stimulation, gradually losing its ability to recover. Eventually, the traumatized brain must shut down for its own survival via depression, memory loss and other “protective” changes in brain function.

By normalizing brainwave patterns, your central nervous system learns how to self-regulate, directing you away from debilitating, painful, destructive disorders, into reclaiming your well being.

Typically clients experience a significant shift in awareness during their first session. Balancing the brain and calming the nervous system allows new neural patterns to form. Properly balanced rhythms result in optimal brainwave patterns. Our emotions are a reflection of the rhythms in our brains: excess beta can produce anxiety; too much frontal alpha could result in depression or ADD. Training brainwaves into efficient patterns allows the central nervous system to learn how to self-regulate, directing it away from debilitating, painful, destructive disorders into effortless processing and optimal functionality.
The above is from Clear Mind Center where we have received our training through.
www.clearmindcenter.com

Blood Pressure

The follow is from Mayo Clinic Staff and very informative as to why it is important to monitor blood pressure. There are many factors to consider in improving your health and many ways to determine what to do. Blood pressure is a single factor and you must consider the total body systems to determine what can be done. The follow link is an example of the type of test and care that we have available to help you reach your health goals. This is a case study of high blood pressure and changes in a short 3 month period of time. As you will notice mayo recommends a change in diet and lifestyle. This system lets us help you make those changes.

http://www.sciencebasednutrition.com/case_studies/High_Blood_Pressure_Diabetes-JR01-07.pdf

Blood pressure chart: What your reading means
By Mayo Clinic staff

If you've just had your blood pressure taken at your doctor's office, you may wonder what your numbers mean. This blood pressure chart can help you figure out if your blood pressure is at a healthy level, or if you'll need to take some steps to improve your numbers.
Blood pressure readings fall into four general categories, ranging from normal to stage 2 hypertension (high blood pressure). The level of your blood pressure determines what kind of treatment you may need. The blood pressure chart lists the ranges that make up each category.

To get an accurate blood pressure reading, your doctor should evaluate your readings based on the average of two or more blood pressure readings taken while you are seated.

Here's a look at the four blood pressure categories and what they mean for you. If your readings fall into two different categories, your correct blood pressure category is the higher category. For example, if your blood pressure reading is 125/95 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), you have stage 1 hypertension.
Top number (systolic) in mm Hg
Bottom number (diastolic) in mm Hg
Your category* What to do**

Below 120 and Below 80 Normal blood pressure Maintain or adopt a healthy lifestyle.

120-139 or 80-89 Prehypertension Maintain or adopt a healthy lifestyle.

140-159 or 90-99 Stage 1 hypertension Maintain or adopt a healthy lifestyle. If blood pressure goal isn't reached in about six months, talk to your doctor about taking one or more medications.

160 or more or 100 or more Stage 2 hypertension Maintain or adopt a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor about taking more than one medication.

*Ranges may be lower for children and teenagers. Talk to your child's doctor if you're concerned your child has high blood pressure.
**Note: These recommendations address high blood pressure as a single health condition. If you also have heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease or certain other conditions, you'll need to treat your blood pressure more aggressively.

If your blood pressure is normal, maintaining or adopting a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the onset of high blood pressure or other health problems. If your blood pressure isn't normal, a healthy lifestyle — oftentimes along with medication — can help bring it under control and reduce your risk of life-threatening complications.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/blood-pressure/hi00043

Brain Training! Neurofeedback. New hope for improving anxiety, depression, ADD, ADHD, memory and other brain related symptoms.

What is Brain Mapping ?

Physical injury to the brain, such as concussion, disrupts normal flow of electrical impulses in the brain tissue. Similarly, toxic injury, seizure disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, anoxia and brain infection (e.g., chronic Lyme encephalitis) alter brainwave activity. ADD, OCD, anxiety, depression and Learning Disability have distinct brainwave “signatures.”

EEG (or electroencephalogram) is a recording of brainwave activity. QEEG (Quantitative EEG), popularly known as brain mapping, refers to a comprehensive analysis of brainwave frequency bandwidths that make up the raw EEG. QEEG is recorded the same way as EEG, but the data acquired in the recording are used to create topographic color-coded maps that show electrical activity of the cerebral cortex.

While other brain imaging techniques (e.g., CT, MRI, PET, SPECT) measure such properties as cerebral blood flow, metabolism or structural integrity, QEEG measures electrical activity of the brain. It provides complex analysis of such brainwave characteristics as symmetry, phase, coherence, amplitude, power and dominant frequency. In fact, subtle disruptions of electrical connectivity and flow in the brain sometimes may be the only or the early signs of a problem.

The QEEG findings are then compared to a normative database. This database consists of brain map recordings of several hundred healthy individuals. Comparisons are displayed as Z scores, which represent standard deviations from the norm.

The primary use of QEEG is to examine patterns of brainwaves and help determine whether a person is an appropriate candidate for Neurofeedback, a treatment that normalizes brainwaves. QEEG does not render a diagnosis, but is designed to help the clinician to make a diagnosis. QEEG is not a substitute for EEG; it is a different process than that carried out by the neurologist when he or she performs an EEG assessment. Medical illness of the brain, such as seizure disorder, dementia, encephalopathy, brain tumor, lesion, haematoma and aneurysm should be diagnosed by a physician.

http://www.northeastcenter.com/information_bulletin_what_is_brain_mapping.htm

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brimhallwellness.blogspot.com/2010/05/brain-training-neurofeedback-new-hope.html' title='Brain Training! One said this is the best I have been in years. I have made more progress in the last few months than I have in years.

At the time I was busy and said that is wonderful and then went on to the next person. As I had time later I reflected about what was said and kicked myself for not enjoying the moment more.

One of the saddest things I see and hear is how someone has suffered for years only because they did not know how to get well. They have been to doctor, therapist, psychologist and others with little to no help. We all know the first law about losing weight: Burn more calories than you take in! True, however not the whole truth. Most of us will swear that the small amount of food we are eating should be causing some weight loss. And if that’s not the case, there are many possibilities to consider, some that may go unnoticed until we really pay attention. A slow metabolic rate and poor adrenal function are often overlooked.

The other law we all have to face and deal with is exercise. Unless we take steps to exercise on a regular basis we will lose lean muscle mass, which is the furnace where calories burn, causing our resting metabolic rate to gradually decline.

Another common sense point is eating too quickly. Inhaling our food doesn’t give our brain the time needed to produce the hormones that tell you when you're full, and that can lead to overeating. So, Mom was right - slow down and chew your food!

It’s a tough battle! After age 20, our metabolism decreases at a rate 0.5% per year, mostly due to the loss of 5-10 pounds of muscle tissue every decade. This means at age 30, we’re burning 5% fewer calories, 10% fewer by age 40. In other words, we burn 5% fewer calories per decade.

As a result of age, we have to cut calories, pick up the exercise or BOTH.

COMMON-SENSE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EVERYONE:
 Burn more calories than you consume
 Balance your endocrine system: Take the load off the pancreas/adrenal.
 Eat plenty of low glycemic foods and if needed, protein type snacks to protect your blood sugar levels and cortisol throughout the day and night.
 Regular cardiovascular and resistance training.

Words and suggestions taken from:
Ben C. This is what I would have for a month supply and just double or triple depending on how many months and how many are in your family.

1. DSF for adrenals to help combat stress. Large bottle

2. Core Level Health Reserve as a multiple vitamin/mineral. Large bottle

3. Magnazyme to aid in digestion and elimination. One bottle

4. Probiotics Plus to keep the colon at optimal health and functioning. One bottle. Adults: Minimum 1 per day Child: 1 every 2 to 3 days. If not feeling well take up to 3 a day for adult and 1-2 a day for child.

5. Immune-Gut Balance. 1 bottle per 3-4 people. We have 2 at home.

6. Total Virx and/or Total Multimune. 1 large bottle of each.

7. Immungen and Virex liquid for the children.

8. Chewable C-500 for the children.

Depending also on the genetic predispostions of an individual or family the above with change or be modified. For instance is someone has problems blood sugar control or sleep the nutrients that they need are going to be slightly different.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brimhallwellness.blogspot.com/2009/09/be-prepared-do-you-have-what-you-need.html' title='Be prepared!! If you thought about what was going on in you life the last time you were sick or not feeling your best usually one of the following or multiple of the follow were present.

1. Increased stress
2. Not sleeping as well or as much as needed
3. Increased sugar, soda, alcohol, or other self inflicted toxins in your diet
4. Changes in temperature or climate, or environment

Some of these things you can control. Others you cannot. So the rule is "Do your best and try not to worry about the rest."

What you should do to decrease your susceptibility?

1. Breathing
2. Sleep
3. Eat good
4. Drink water
5. Take a bath with Epsom salts and baking soda or other bath salts
6. Relaxation therapy
7. Light exercise or stretching like yoga
8. Get adjusted
9. Get a massage

Your body needs certain nutrients to stay well and for your immune system to work properly. The following is a simple to do list before you are sick or if you do get sick what you can do to support and enhance your body's natural defenses.

Daily:
1. Probiotics and Immuno Globulin's help the gut stay healthy. A large part of the defense mechanisms our bodies have are in the mucus membranes of our digestive tract. The products we use are Probitic plus and Immune Gut Balance. Both are safe and effective with children.

2. Enzymes to digest and break down our foods and any junk foods we eat (Magnazyme or Total Enzymes)

3. Adrenal support (DSF or Adrenal Lyph Plus)

4. Multiple daily vitamin and mineral (Core Level Health Reserve)

5. Immune support (Total Virx or Total Multimune 1 a day)

If you start having symptoms:

1. Continue or start adrenal support DSF 1, 2 x day

2. Start taking Total Virx and/or Total Multimune: 1 every waking hour for 3-5 days, then 1 tablet 3 times a day for at least a month, then 1 a day until the “flu season” is over.

3. Suck on vitamin C with bioflavonoid to coat your mucus membranes to reduce infection and ease the throat. (Chewable C 500)

4. Enzymes, Probiotics, Immune-Gut Balance daily.

5. Take a detox bath each night and get extra rest. Bath salts from Abra like Cold and Flu Bath are wonderful.

6. Get adjusted, get a massage, footbath, sauna, and drink lots of good water.

Children:

With children the follow are very helpful.

1. Have them taking Immune-Gut balance every day. This will help keep the immune system and gut functioning optimally.

2. Have them taking a Probiotic and enzymes each day and around holidays where they are getting more sugar 1 to 2 capsules a day.

3. Chewable C 500 1-2 tablets a day for children under 8 and up to 5-6 for children over 8. If a person gets to much vitamin C the stools will become loose. So this is your notice to reduce the dose.

4. For those younger children that will not take any vitamins use Virex homeopathic and or Immugen 5 drops 2-5 x day for a week then 5 drops 2 x day for a month.

This is what I do with my own family and have used for years to help others. In our experience by being prepared you and your family will be able handle the "flu season" instead of the "flu season" handling you!

The FLU.........Will It Get YOU?

The media is having a PARTY with the information on the flu. The government has issued multiple statements about how bad it is going to be and recommending that everyone get the vaccination but there may not be enough. We have seen letters coming from schools and saying the shots will be offered to our children at the school.

To vaccinate or not is a personal decision and one that should be thought about by weighing the pros and cons. To make a decision based on fear is usually not best!

We will be having our Ultimate Immune System workshop 1 month earlier this year due to all the questions we are getting about the flu and what can or ought to be done. The class with be 7 P.M. September 15th at Brimhall Wellness Center! You will not want to miss it! We will cover what you can do....What you ought to do.....and how to prepare your family not only this "Flu Season" but all others.

Do not worry for all of you that are out of state I will be posting what you can do also! But for now remember to take deep breaths, get 7-9 hour of sleep a night, have fun every day, laugh as often as possible especially at yourself, and hug someone you love and tell them they are special!

Back to School! Many thanks to all the help from JB Water, the Brimhall Wellness Center Staff, Carl Block for providing the music and all of our wonderful family and friends that came and celebrated with us!

One of the highlights for me was getting to spend time getting to know many of you better while at the juice smoothie bar. Many people have asked me how we make the smoothies so below are a few of our favorite recipes.

Breakfast is the most commonly missed meal usually because of no time in the morning. I think she created it over a year ago. So, here I am.... getting it all going.

Thursday, July 16th we are holding our 4th anual patient pool party at Stapley Junior High School in Mesa, Arizona from 7-9pm. We are excited about the party! There will be food, fun, and live music! One of our clients said we should have a juice bar.....so.....we are! We are going to be raffling off some fun prizes and eating yummy food! We hope as many people as possible can come! If you need directions call the office at 480-964-5107.

Each of the clients I have, and do work with, drive me to be and do better. Thank you. This blog is for you to use as a resource to get information that you can trust to help you and your family.

I spend many hours a week answering questions to individuals all across the globe and want to share that information with as many as want it. I want to be able to continue to help them and you in your journey to get well and stay well.

Over the past 40 plus years my father and I have educated thousands of doctors and patients and have developed a system to identify and correct the causes or as we like to call them, the interferences, that rob us of our health, wellness, vitality, strength, energy, clarity, and emotional freedoms. Interference is what stops or limits our natural inborn, innate ability to heal ourselves. These interferences are: 1. Structural problems from injuries 2. Nutritional interferences from inadequate or toxic diets, 3. Emotional interferences from stress and limiting beliefs, 4. Electromagnetic interferences from all of our electrical "necessities", 5. Toxin interferences from our environment, and 6. Allergies that create misery or perpetuate autoimmune reactions.

In all the teaching I have done over the past 15 plus years I hold to the motto of teaching people how to think to come up with their own answers. I hope to continue to do this here.

Please feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer them at different times on the blog.

Best of health!!
